Gone are the days when you hid all aspects of your femininity under layers of warm, though bulky, sweaters topped off with a lumpy but warm coat. Winter coats of 2011 are all about warmth, functionality and above all, a flattering shape. Key trends to look for are flirty ruffles, bell sleeves, crisp collars and belted waists. Some even add curves where you may need a little help, but still skim over those bulges you’re not that fond of.
Colour is in this season. Don’t blend in with the crowd in black and beige, try a bright cheery red to lift your spirits. Or a sunshine yellow to match that smile! The brighter, the better and they’ll do wonders for your mood.
Not a fan of colour? Not a problem. Coat designs this season are in a range of funky prints too. From zebra to leopard, houndstooth to checks, there is something for everyone’s tastes and something to go with every wardrobe. Try making a statement with just the coat and keeping the rest of your winter wardrobe simple and elegant. A hat, scarf and gloves combo in contrasting or tonal colours is an ideal way to keep warm and look good at the same time.
Look for something a little different with embellished details such as edgy cuffs, metallic buttons and some detail in the stitching.
Top five styles this season:
The Aviator Jacket – For a more casual look, this is perfect for those chilly days.
The Military Coat – Straight, sleek lines and a structured, elegant style. A classic.
The Pea Coat – A tailored, double breasted coat that is versatile for day or night wear.
The Trench Coat – Another classic addition, look for bright colours and belt detail for 2011.
The Cape – A sleeveless style usually secured with a belt or clip.
Girly, feminine and warm. What more do you need?
